So the flood defences weren’t really ‘very easily accessible’ as I’d thought before and they were pretty out in the open too! So with the quite substantial risk of being spotted, we still decided to carry on, first of all going to the wrong side, which quite amusingly involving me struggling to get up a relatively small wall! So back round to the other side, a small drop later we were in. Matt and Abi seemed to get in no problem, so it must just have been me! Once we were in though, the excitement grew, after a small amount of prepping the camera and torches, we ventured inside! And much to our surprise, they weren’t too interesting!
There was quite a lot of weird stuff straight out of an alien movie on the Walls, (or like what you see on the majority of streets and doorways of derby city centre after a Friday or Saturday night! Come to think of it, it’s actually after most nights in Derby!) a couple of strange small handles which i can only presume were used as ladders, and some chains straight out of a saw movie! Oh and it was COMPLETELY pitch black, so thankfully the two £3 ASDA LED torches worked a treat! I was surprised that for the most part it didn’t really smell to bad in there either, given that it was only really rain water it was quite a relief… So after a few minutes of taking some rather unfocused snaps, the tripod came out for some pics of us all. Now i’ve got to say the flash is rather deceptive as it was bounced off the ceiling as it was NOWHERE NEAR as light as the photos made out, you couldn’t see a thing! Which i kind of ignored when using my L Lens as the 10 second self timer didn’t really give me enough time to get to where i needed to be in the photo, so rushing to get there…i made a boo boo. Happily i didn’t fall over, i slipped and ended up putting my hand in something that i have no idea what it was…but at least it wasn’t orange…and it didn’t smell…so every cloud and all that!
The photos that came out were actually okay thanks to the external flash but focusing was a right pain in the backside with everything so difficult to see!
As much as i had made a meal of getting up from the wrong side, i also apparently made a bigger meal of getting up from the right side. Matt and Abi seemed to be quite graceful in what looked like walking up the wall, me however…is a different story… I decided to do a bit more of an adventurous ‘jump’ which ended in my knee smashing into the concrete, with stones…lovely…So a ripped trouser knee later we were out!
In my opinion i don’t really think i’d bother going to visit the tunnels again, unless i end up walking down a couple of miles to see where they end up there isn’t really a huge amount to see apart from the double tunnel split where it just goes to each side of the Markeaton car park! But as a Sunday afternoon mini explore i’m glad i went!
Next week…Aida Bliss! (hopefully)
